Williams eager to take revenge on his son on the golf course after the severe World Championship judgment!

Williams was raised to fight Stuart Bingham – and he couldn’t wait to hit the fairways!

Mark Williams was looking forward to beating his son on the golf course after his harsh judgment kept the world’s number 3 dream of a fourth World Snooker Championship title alive and well, Will Jennings writes.

Potter Cwm topped world number 14 Stuart Bingham 13-11 in a bumpy round two and was anything but straightforward for Williams, who need a brave 75-frame final break to finally cross the finish line.

Williams and Bingham were tied at eight frames each overnight and after a stern word from son Kian revitalized the Welshman on the tables, Williams was desperate to enact his revenge on the fairways.

“He didn’t say I was playing shit, he said I’m shit!” the 45-year-old laughed.

“He just said ‘how are you so bad these days, dad?’ But what can you do, just laugh? I went back to the hotel and gave him a couple of punches!

“He’s pretty dry and he likes to get the mouse – I don’t know where he gets it from! I wasn’t expecting that, that’s for sure, but I just walked in and he said “why are you so lousy now, dad?”

“What can I do, I know I played badly and I just have to laugh, right? I’ll take it to the golf course this afternoon and smash it!

“He doesn’t play billiards himself much – he tries to hit a couple of shots in the practice room with me but it’s useless!

“I’ll try to tee time in Rotherham, take my son there and give him an absolute bullshit because of all the club he’s been giving me in the last few days!

“I’ll piss him off now when I knock with the birdies – he’s going to pout!”

The breaks of 97, 90 and 55 in the first session proved insufficient to satisfy Kian, but Williams came out a changed man on Friday, as visits of 90, 74 and 67 set the stage for victory.

Bingham, world champion in 2015, fought brilliantly, but a brave 75 of the 22-time winner of the event in the standings canceled his progress and booked Williams a seat in the quarter-finals.

There he will face Ding Junhui or Ronnie O’Sullivan, with the latter already boasting five world titles in his career.

Four is the magic number for Williams and after 14 years between his second and third world titles, he has a golden opportunity to equalize the level with the great John Higgins.

Williams held a memorable naked press conference after promising to do so if he won in 2018, but two years after that triumph, he was far less willing to make such a promise.

“There’s nothing in line – you couldn’t bear to see me naked again!” He added.

“Once, and that’s it – I won’t say anything stupid, because whatever I say, if the unthinkable happens I should do it, so I’ll keep my mouth shut!”
