What Manchester United told Tahith Chong and James Garner before the moves on loan

Manchester United U23 manager Neil Wood insists potential loan moves for Tahith Chong and James Garner are designed to give them the best possible chance of making it to United in the future.

United are looking to loan out some of their fringe young players this summer, with Chong and Garner leading the list of expected departures.

The youngsters have both shone for United at reserve level this season and have played a key role in promoting Wood’s side to Premier League 2 Division One.

Chong gets closer to Werder Bremen as Garner is attracting league interest and Wood insists both players have a great chance of making it to United if they show their talents next season.

“This is the next logical step for their assistants,” Wood told MEN Sport when asked specifically about Chong and Garner.

“If they are not part of the first team there is no reason to keep them playing in the Under 23, it would not be right for their individual development. Now they are at the point where they have to go to play in the league, play in an environment from before team, play in those matches every week where they will be stretched and find difficulties.

“My advice is that there is a strong chance if they come out, prove themselves and do really well there is a chance that the manager will appreciate what he sees and bring them back to his first team.

“The incentive is there, it’s not that they are going on loan and we are trying to find an exit strategy for them. They are going on loan to show how good they are, to show what they can do and to make an impact in the club in which they will be and hopefully will return to being a Manchester United player. “
