Warholm’s new check on Young’s old 400m hurdles world record

New festival of Norwegian athletics. Just over a week ago it was the young Jakob Ingebrigtsen who broke the European record, in this case 1,500 meters, in the Diamond League in Monaco. And yesterday, at the stop of this tour in Stockholm, it was his compatriot Karsten Warlholm who achieved a new continental record. The 24-year-old athlete, with a time of 46.87, improved his European record of 400 meters hurdles by five hundredths and is already only nine away from the world record that Kevin Young (46.78) set at the Barcelona Games.

In the same way that the American hurdler touched the last hurdle in 1992, yesterday Warholm also stumbled over the last hurdle in a race in which he confirmed that Young’s record can take a backseat at any time. And, as if that were not enough, an hour and a half later he won the 400 flat with 45.05. Also in the Swedish capital, Bruno Hortelano withdrew injured in the 200 meters -thrust in the hamstring-, Esther Guerrero stopped the clock in 4: 03.13 in the 1,500 meters -5th best Spanish time ever- and Jesús Gómez scored 3: 33.46 at 1,500.

Today in Castellón

On the other hand, Gipuzkoan athletics will be well represented today at the José Antonio Cansino Memorial in Castellón. Pablo Torrijos will look at home to improve his own Spanish record (17.18 meters). The jumpers Maialen Axpe and Irati Mitxelena will also compete.
