VfL Wolfsburg is fighting its way into the final

Dhe triple hunters of VfL Wolfsburg fought their way into the final of the Champions League. The German champions and cup winners won the exciting semi-final against strong FC Barcelona despite some wobbles 1-0 (0-0) and is in the final for Europe’s crown for the fifth time.

The Swedish attacker Fridolina Rolfö (58th) had the 2013 and 2014 titleholders cheer in San Sebastian. The opponent on Sunday comes from France: Bayern conqueror and defending champion Olympique Lyon with playmaker Dzsenifer Marozsan will face Sara Däbritz’s Paris St. Germain in the second semi-final on Wednesday (8 p.m.) in Bilbao.

Four days after the 9-1 victory in the quarter-finals against Glasgow City, VfL coach Stephan Lerch changed his starting eleven to one position. Instead of Lena Goeßling, the Dutch Dominique Bloodworth started in the defense center.

And Wolfsburg had more to do defensively in the opening minutes than in the entire quarter-finals. Barca also had their first chances from the constant trouble spot Asisat Oshoala (8th). On the second occasion for the Nigerian striker (13th), referee Katalin Kulcsar (Hungary) let a handball by Kathrin Hendrich go through in the penalty area.

Only after 20 minutes and deeper pressing did the Wolfsburg women get better grip, but the former she-wolf Caroline Hansen had the Barca lead on her feet again (41st). A header from Svenja Huth (42nd) in return was Wolfsburg’s only chance in the first half.

After the break, the lively exchange of blows continued. The conspicuous Hansen repeatedly initiated good Barca attacks on the right side, VfL focused on an early start and quick switching.

This is how the Wolfsburg tour came about. After a fine cross from Huth, Ewa Pajor first tried an overhead kick, then Rolfö lurking behind dusted off. But with their backs to the wall, Barcelona responded with even more pressure in the attack, the hectic final phase was a tremendous game for VfL.
