The 49ers are now a week away in training camp as the team continue preparations for Week 1. Head Coach Kyle Shanahan speaks to the media after Saturday’s session to discuss the events at SAP Performance Facility, as well as to provide several player updates. Here are some observations from the session:
Summary of practice
– Left guard Laken Tomlinson continues to dominate in drills 1 on 1 and his offensive line neighbor Trent Williams continues to take notice.
“He’s got everything you need in an All-Pro guard,” Williams said. “He’s got the size, the power, the movement, the brain, he’s got the skills – he’s got it all. And I think last year Laken really put things in place if you watch him on film. that he played as one of the best guards in the league, believe it or not, no matter what people say. You watch the movie, I think he proved it. have another consistent year, I think everyone will start to think of him as a Pro Bowl, All-Professional Player because that’s his talent and those are the goals he’s set for himself. “
– Jamycal Hasty did some big runs where the undrafted rookie displayed his quick bursts in the run and pass game.
– During the team’s 11v11 red zone drills, Hasty, Brandon Aiyuk, Raheem Mostert, Tevin Coleman and Jauan Jennings all scored touchdowns.
– After missing Friday’s practice, Coleman returned to practice and took a court from CJ Beathard for a sizable gain during full teamwork.
– For the second consecutive practice, Richard Sherman recorded an interception. The veteran corner kicked the ball perfectly and jumped the course on a pass intended for George Kittle.
“It’s Sherm playing with the vision,” Shanahan said. “Those two passes weren’t for the guy Sherm was covering. But if you are browsing guys, or if you stare at a guy for too long and you don’t know where he is, Sherm is just going to follow your eyes and come out of nowhere. And this has happened to him twice in the past two days. “
– Jimmy Garoppolo fact connect with Kittle on another room during the session. He found the end tight for a 25-yard pickup on an 11-on-11 job.
– Ahkello Witherspoon has done several remarkable plays. He defended a deep pass from Beathard intended for JJ Nelson during full teamwork. Witherspoon also landed a SEB and a jumping interception in the end zone during the red zone drills.
– Kevin Givens stalled for a loss of yards during the “move the ball” job.
– In the team’s final period, Nick Mullens made two big ties with Jennings for gains of around 20 and 15 yards, respectively.
– The session ended with a nice bomb downstream from Garoppolo to Kendrick Bourne during the “ball movement” period. Garoppolo’s pass sailed about 40 yards in the air and hit Bourne in stride as he beat his man in the end zone for the score and the high point of practice.
“Overall a great game and a great game decision. The O line had a really clean pocket and just gave me time to follow my course,” said Bourne. “Kyle followed a good play and me and Jimmy connected well. Good ball from Jimmy. Could have let me run after and try to score. Good play overall.”
