Tiger Woods holds a surprising object from his time as captain of the United States national team

Tiger Woods has been the biggest name in golf for over 20 years. Whether he’s struggling to make it to a major or to win the Masters, he’s one of the two greatest players of all time. Although he has put up incredible numbers as an individual on the Tour, one of Woods’ proudest achievements has little to do with his performance.

Woods has always been reserved about his home and possessions, rarely opening up to reporters. Recently, however, he revealed an interesting story about one of the trophies in his home office.

The story of Tiger Woods and Matt Kuchar

During Woods’ journey to the top of the PGA rankings, he won many tournaments. He frequently competed against Matt Kuchar, whom Woods defeated in the 1997 Amateur Championship as their careers were just beginning. But one of the memories in Woods’ trophy room is a golf ball once hit by Kuchar. And no, it’s not a reminder of the 1997 amateur championship – it’s something much more meaningful for Woods.

It would be fair to say that there has been a lot of pressure on Woods throughout his career, especially after he predicted he would follow a similar trajectory to Michael Jordan’s. But the expectations on an individual of getting points for himself can never live up to the hopes of their country on their shoulders.

Rumors have been circulating in the golf world for some time that Woods will become captain at the next Ryder Cup, according to a Golf.com article. However, that wouldn’t be his first time as a national team captain.

Tiger Woods, captain of the American team

In 2019, Woods assumed the position of Presidents Cup captain, the only time up to this point he has led a team in an international event. In addition to Woods as captain, the American team included Justin Thomas, Dustin Johnson, Patrick Cantlay, Xander Schauffele, Webb Simpson, Kuchar, Bryson DeChambeau, Tony Finau, Gary Woodland, Rickie Fowler and Patrick Reed.

Some of the best players of the day were on the American squad, but that wasn’t nearly enough. Entering the final day of play, the American team was down 10-8. However, the US team has recovered to an incredible extent, losing only two of the 12 games of the day. They drew another four and won six outright.

With a final score of 16-14, America captured the 2019 Presidents Club under Woods’ leadership. And the critical putt that put the US team over the top? 17th hole, Matt Kuchar. With the win blocked, America went to the 18th hole to finish the tournament as champion.

How caddy John Wood commemorated the victory

In a Golf Digest video, Woods further explained why the putt (and win) meant so much to him, and why he was so grateful to Kuchar’s caddy who saved the ball. “John Wood was so good,” said Tiger, “that he held the ball – he changed it for him and they played 18, and he gave me the ball around 18. Which is really cool. This is the winning ball to win the Cup on the seventeenth hole. “

Aside from a small number of international tournaments, golf is not truly a team sport. Although the return to the Olympics was scheduled this year, we will have to wait to see America compete on the international stage for gold medals. But tournaments like the Ryder Cup and the Presidents Cup bring Americans together to cheer team in an individual sport, and not just the players themselves.
