The Spanish Federation reaches out to Asobal to postpone the start of the League

The European Handball League did not start when it was scheduled for Bidasoa Irun and there is a possibility that neither will the Sacyr Asobal League, whose The first match is Bidasoa-Ademar this Tuesday in Artaleku.

In view of how the coronavirus crisis evolves and, in response to requests for coaches and players, than they do not see health guarantees or clear protocols, the Spanish Handball Federation announced yesterday that “it reaches out to the Club Association to postpone the start of the league competition this season 20/21”.

Francisco Blázquez, president of the RFEBM, understands that “the demand for players and coaches shows the same concern that we have, understanding that given the current outbreaks, the imminent league start generates too much uncertainty. Because of that I want offer Asobal the possibility of delaying the league start, and carefully analyze a new configuration of the competition, since our greatest concern must be the health and safety of our athletes.

Blázquez explains that “we all have to ensure that we provide athletes with the maximum possible health measures, aware that risk 0 does not exist, but we must adopt all possible preventive guidelines”. In that line, Asobal clubs could not withstand continuous PCR testing, as required by common sense and as is done in other sports.

A different calendar

Both the Players Association and the Coaches Association understand that the league start scheduled for Tuesday is too early taking into account the regrowths that are occurring. In fact, the coaches last week presented an innovative calendar project, grouping the teams in bubbles and playing in a different system than usual.

In addition to everything that is falling, Asobal has 34 days this season, since there were two promotions and no relegation. The proposal of some clubs to play in two phases to face 26 days did not work, so the calendar is truly compressed, with practically no option to recover possible postponed matches.

To balance the days, The post-lockdown league is scheduled to start with a two-week double-game, in addition to 18 days scheduled in the first three and a half months, plus European competitions for various teams.
