The nightmare scenario Chelsea could face in next season’s Champions League draw

Chelsea could fall into pot three for next season’s Champions League depending on how the rest of the competition and the Europa League play out.

The Blues secured qualification for the European competition 2020/21 with a win on the last day over the Wolves in July.

However, it could be very difficult to qualify from the group stage when they are promoted to the third pot.

If RB Leipzig wins its first Champions League trophy and Inter Milan is successful in the Europa League, the Blues will be placed in the third pot as they currently have the lowest coefficient in the second pot.

Leipzig will play in the quarterfinals of the competition against Atletico Madrid tonight (Thursday).

Inter will face Shakhtar Donetsk in the Europa League semi-finals on Monday 17th August.

If both clubs win their respective trophies, Chelsea could face a tougher Champions League group as both Leipzig and Inter will jump over them in the sowing.

In the course of a season, each club receives ranking points, which can be achieved by reaching various points in the Champions League and the Europa League.

The sum achieved over a five-year period is then determined as the club coefficient, which increases the further the teams progress in European competition – which means that they are in a higher pot.

Two places in the first pot are reserved for last season’s Champions League and Europa League winners. This would mean that both Leipzig and Inter would skip Chelsea if they win their respective competitions.
