You have rewritten the record books in tennis, now Bob and Mike Bryan are ending their sensationally successful double careers. The love for sport was still there, only the bodies no longer played along.

Dhe twins Bob and Mike Bryan, together the most successful tennis doubles in history, ended their careers shortly before the start of the US Open. The two 42-year-old Americans announced on Thursday. “We both feel that this is the right time,” said Bob, two minutes older. “At that age you need so much work to go out there and compete. We still love to play, but we don’t love preparing our bodies to go out there, ”added Mike.

The Bryan brothers can look back on a previously unique career. They won all four Grand Slam tournaments, all nine ATP Masters tournaments, triumphed four times at the ATP Finals and won the gold medal at the 2012 Olympic Games in London. For the first time the two reached number one in the double world rankings in September 2003, they stood together at the top for 438 weeks and ended ten seasons as leaders of the ranking.

“Bob and Mike have rewritten the record books in the course of their phenomenal careers” – this is how ATP President Andrea Gaudenzi paid homage to the successful duo. “They were the figureheads of the men’s doubles. The tour will sorely miss her. ”The Bryan brothers hold the record of the most tournaments won (119) as well as the most Grand Slam and ATP Masters titles (16 and 39). Originally, they had planned to stop after the US Open that started on Monday. At the tournament in New York in 1995 they made their Grand Slam debut.
