The Dodgers can count on improving against left handed pitching rather than trading for the bat

With the 1:00 pm PT MLB trade deadline fast approaching Monday afternoon, there is some uncertainty about what to do with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Historically they have been active, but they probably have their most talented roster to date.

They seem to focus on the launch having previously been linked to Texas Rangers’ Lance Lynn, Mike Clevinger before being traded to the San Diego Padres and Milwaukee Brewers closest Josh Hader, among others.

Another area of need they may be looking to address is on the side of the positional player as they have struggled with the left handed pitch this season. There is no question that the Dodgers’ lineup is full of talent, but their base rate plus left handed hit rate ranks near the bottom of baseball. This is compared to an .850 OPS against rights, which is the first.

Despite these left-handed fights, the president of baseball operations for the Dodgers doesn’t necessarily believe he has to add a bat to the deadline, via Bill Plunkett of the Southern California News Group:

“I think the improvement has to come from within,” he said. “Obviously we are talking about a really small champion for these guys. If I were facing a lefty starter, I’d bet on their resume rather than these 30 hitters. We have like five guys who are way below their established watermarks, and some of the information below – in terms of contact quality for many of them – argues that it’s more bad luck with the balls at stake than their struggles. But again, I’ll bet on the established track record and go back to that. “

Overall, when you look at the Dodgers’ offense, there’s no question they have one of the best in baseball as they just broke the National League record with 57 home runs in just one month.

If they want to make an acquisition, there may be some cheaper options available like Todd Frazier and Asdrubal Cabrera, though it’s not surprising that Friedman is confident in the players they already have in the organization.

Friedman hopes to be opportunistic at the deadline

Just because they might not need a club, though, doesn’t mean the Dodgers won’t make a move. Friedman recently said he hopes to be “opportunistic” on deadline to add impact to players.

Whether it’s Lynn, Clevinger or Hader remains to be seen, but the Dodgers have the big league talent and the potential capital to complete any deal they want.
