From reports from The Tribune staff

CHELSEA – The Chelsea Fire & Rescue boss died after being hospitalized for almost a month.

Chief Wayne Shirley was hospitalized on Wednesday July 8, 2020, with serious complications from a chronic health problem. On Thursday August 6, the city of Chelsea announced Shirley’s death.

“His service in this city lasted his entire adult life,” said the Facebook post. “There is no way to capture in words what it has meant for this city. “

Shirley was the first and only chief of the Chelsea fire department. He started his career as a volunteer firefighter in 1981. He was appointed chief of firefighters and coordinator of emergency management in 2001.

Chelsea Fire and Rescue also posted on Facebook after Shirley died.

“Friends and neighbors, we want to thank you for all your thoughts, prayers and best wishes,” said the post. “It absolutely breaks my heart to tell you that we just learned from Chief Shirley’s family that his battle is over and that he has returned home to be with the Lord. I will continue to keep you updated on any agreements made. The boss has spent his entire life serving Chelsea citizens, so I think you know how special you are to him. Please raise his family and everyone who loves him in prayer right now. Thank you all.”
