The cause of Daley Blind’s collapse on the field in Ajax’s friendly match

KOMPAS.com – A moment of horror occurred when Ajax Amsterdam defender Daley Blind collapsed in a friendly match against Hertha Berlin on Tuesday (25/8/2020) local time.

Daley Blind fell to the grass in the 78th minute of the friendly at the Johan Cruyff Arena Stadium.

The former Manchester United defender was responsive and he was immediately surrounded by his team mates on the pitch with the medical team swiftly approaching the defender.

While holding his chest, Daley Blind then got up and left the field on foot.

Blind was indeed diagnosed with a heart problem in December 2019 when he experienced a headache in the Champions League match against Valencia.

Ajax coach, Erik Ten Hag, expressed according to what match caused the defender to lie on the ground.

“The ICD was on. He was immediately replaced and now he is fine. We will investigate this matter,” said Ten Hag as quoted from Voetbal International.

“Will he train again? We have to wait for the test results and make a decision from there.”

ICD (Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator) is a device to monitor heart rate.

This small, battery-powered device is connected to a person’s heart with electrical cables.

The ICD monitors irregular heartbeats that can be life threatening. If it detects this, the ICD attempts to correct the problem with a low-energy electric pulse.

If the heart is still not beating normally, the ICD will send a high-energy signal.

Daley Blind installed this ICD below collarbone or collarbone after the events in December.

The incident that happened to Blind certainly gives a flashback to the incident that happened to former Ajax player, Abdelhak Nouri.

On 8 July 2017, Abdelhak Nouri collapsed in the 72nd minute of the friendly against Werder Bremen in Austria.

The BBC reports that Nouri has complained of stomachaches and was unable to sleep well ahead of the match.

Even though Nouri just entered the field to replace Hakim Ziyech in the second half of the match which was played in that hot temperature, he couldn’t last long.

Nouri slowly lowered her head and stretched out on the ground, her eyes looking up at the sky.

The BBC calculated that it took 10 seconds for the referee to notice Nouri and call the medical team.

Fisio Ajax then arrived 10 seconds later, followed by the team doctor 15 seconds after that.

When Ajax striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar panicked, the Bremen players reacted too and their team doctor ran onto the pitch.

The players of both camps formed a circle around Nouri. Some started crying and others prayed

Two paramedics arrived and put in the shock kits about seven minutes after the player collapsed on the field.

Helikoper then brought him to a hospital in Innsbruck, about 65 kilometers from the playing field.
