Steve Mandanda extends his lease at OM until 2024

An end of career on La Canebière is looming for Steve Mandanda. The emblematic OM goalkeeper has extended his contract with the Olympian club until 2024, announced last Wednesday afternoon in a press release. “Steve Mandanda is long-term with this new contract, on the cusp of a historic season which will see OM return to the most prestigious of European competitions,” welcomes OM.

With this extension, Steve Mandanda should wear his record for appearing in the OM jersey well beyond the current 549 matches. “Il fenomeno” played his first meeting for Marseille on August 25, 2007 in Caen, a few weeks after arriving on loan from Le Havre.

Since then, Steve Mandanda has occupied the Marseille cages almost continuously, his only infidelity to OM consisting of a season on the other side of the Channel, at Crystal Palace, in 2016-2017.

Mandanda to the Euro in the lead

By securing his future, the OM captain is preparing to return to the Champions League this season after having regained his best level during the past financial year, finished in second place in Ligue 1 after the early termination of the competition due to pandemic.

This contract extension, entered into two months after that of Payet, another thirty-something in good shape, allows OM to stabilize the executives of its workforce to build “phase 2” of the McCourt project around young players with high potential. And he gives Mandanda the opportunity to project himself at OM and in the French team, with the objective of playing the Euro in the summer of 2021 and then the World-2022 in Qatar, as an understudy for Hugo Lloris.

The Marseille captain, 2018 world champion in Russia and with 32 caps with the Blues, was crowned French champion in 2010 under the leadership of Didier Deschamps. He has also lifted the Coupe de la Ligue three times (2010,2011, 2012), been voted best goalkeeper in Ligue 1 five times (2008, 2011, 2015, 2016 and 2018) and played in the final of the Europa League he two years ago against Antoine Griezmann’s Atlético de Madrid.
