Roundup MLB: Giolito’s no-hitter keeps the White Sox going

Right-footed Lucas Giolito launched the 19th no-hitter in the history of the Chicago White Sox franchise on Tuesday night, beating 13 and walking to lead Chicago to a 4-0 win over the visiting Pittsburgh Pirates.

Giolito retired the last 18 Pirates he faced when the White Sox won for the eighth time in nine games and set Pittsburgh’s record three-game streak.

Chicago right fielder Adam Engel snatched a shirt from Pirates shortstop Erik Gonzalez’s bat to finish the match, while the White Sox recorded their first no-hitter since Philip Humber pitched a perfect match in a win 4-0 over the Seattle Mariners on April 21, 2012.

Giolito (3-2) threw 74 of his 101 strikes. He accompanied Gonzalez on four pitches to take out the fourth but proved to be the only bottom runner of the Pirates. Tim Anderson and Eloy Jimenez had RBI singles in a three-run second for Chicago, and catcher James McCann, Giolito’s batterymate, contributed a sacrifice fly in the fourth.

Red Sox 9, Blue Jays 7

Rafael Devers scored a base-load triple in a six-run sixth inning and Boston defeated host Toronto in the opening of a three-game streak in Buffalo.

Xander Bogaerts added three hits and Mitch Moreland had two hits, two RBI and two walks for the Red Sox, who overcame an initial four-run deficit.

Phillips Valdez (1-0) conceded a hit and walk in 1 2/3 innings for the win. Matt Barnes got his second save despite allowing Teoscar Hernandez to make his 11th homer this season.

Phillies 8, Nationals 3

JT Realmuto hit a three-run homer to raise by visiting Philadelphia over Washington. Jean Segura contributed three hits and two RBIs, and Roman Quinn had two hits and two steals for the Phillies, who won their second straight after a five-game losing streak.

Andrew McCutchen knocked on two points, scored twice and stole two bases. Phillies starter Jake Arrieta pitched five solid innings before an hour of delayed rain, giving up three hits and one run. Arrieta (2-3) only made 54 shots, 34 per strike, as she walks one and hits one.

Adam Eaton made homers and singles, while Trea Turner also scored a home run for the Nationals, who lost their second in a row. Asdrubal Cabrera had two successes. Washington star Erick Fedde (1-2) conceded seven hits and four runs in five innings. He opened one and walked one.

Indians 4, Gemini 2

Shane Bieber knocked out 10 batters and Francisco Lindor scored a two-run homer in the sixth inning to lift Cleveland to victory over Minnesota.

Bieber (6-0), who has recorded double-digit strikeouts in five of his seven starts this season, allowed two runs out of four hits in six innings to move up to 5-0 in 10 career appearances (nine appearances) against Minnesota.

Indian rescuers Oliver Perez and James Karinchak bridged the gap with Brad Hand, who retired from the team in the ninth inning for his eighth save of the season.

Rays 4, Orioles 2

Tyler Glasnow hit 13 career hitters in seven innings, and Hunter Renfroe and Manuel Margot hit consecutive home while Tampa Bay visited Baltimore.

Glasnow (1-1) made his best six-game appearance this year, hitting the season high for seven innings and scoring two out of five hits and a walk. Margot finished 2 for 3 with the homer, a walk and a stolen base, and Renfroe scored twice.

Baltimore star Tommy Milone (1-4) worked 5 1/3 innings and gave up four shots. The southpaw allowed four runs, two earned and walked one while eliminating six. Renato Nunez went 2 for 4 with a solo home run as the Orioles lost for the first time in four fights to their Eastern American League rival in 2020.

Astros 6, Angels 3 (Game 1)

Josh Reddick and Jack Mayfield each had two single runs in a five-run first inning and Cristian Javier was effective in the sixth inning when handler Houston stepped away from Los Angeles in the first game of a doubleheader.

The Astros looked like a team in a rush to beat the Angels for the fourth time in five fights this season when Jose Altuve, Carlos Correa and Yuli Gurriel put together a single straight single for a 1-0 lead in the first against the starter. Angels Jose Suarez (0-2).

Mike Trout went 0 of 3 with a strikeout for the Angels, who have lost a third straight game and fallen for the seventh time in their last eight games.

Angels 12, Astros 5 (Game 2)

Brian Goodwin closed a four-run first inning with a base clearing single on the right court and Los Angeles opened it with four more runs in the seventh inning to save a split in a doubleheader with Houston and end a three-game slip.

Astros right-footed rookie Brandon Bielak (3-2) suffered defeat after giving up four runs out of three strokes and three walks and failed to get out of the first inning.

Felix Pena (2-0) helped the Angels get out of a jam in the fifth to get the win. David Fletcher finished 3 for 5 and posted a multi-RBI match alongside Goodwin (3) and Shohei Ohtani (2).

10 of A, Rangers 3

Matt Olson and Marcus Semien hit two two-run homers, and Stephen Piscotty snatched a three-run brace to help Oakland win in Arlington, Texas.

The As, whose 21 wins are the largest in the American League, have won five of their last seven games. The defeat was the ninth in 10 games for Rangers. Texas’ only win in that stretch came on Monday in the opening of the current four-game series.

Sean Manaea (2-2) allowed three points, one earned, out of six hits in five innings to take the win. He scored three goals and didn’t walk as a hitter in his 86-shot exit. TJ McFarland, Lou Trivino and Jordan Weems teamed up for four innings of goalless relief for Oakland.

Royals 5, Cardinals 4

Ryan McBroom took home two points, including the game’s winner, as the visit to Kansas City overtook St. Louis.

McBroom’s double single RBI in the eighth inning off losing pitcher John Gant (0-1) broke a 4-4 tie. Josh Staumont (1-1), the Royals’ fifth pitcher, earned the win. Ryan O’Hearn went 3 for 4 with a homer, two points scored and two RBI for the Royals.

Royals owner Matt Harvey only lasted 2 2/3 innings allowing for four runs out of five hits and two walks. Cardinals starting pitcher Adam Wainwright worked seven innings and allowed four runs out of seven hits and two walks.

Mariners 8, Padres 3

JP Crawford and Austin Nola hit a homer, leading Seattle to victory in San Diego, setting the Padres’ record seven straight wins. The Mariners have won their fourth straight game and have achieved their fifth victory in six games.

Seattle scored twice in each of the first two innings against Padres star Chris Paddack for a 4-0 lead, then added four more after San Diego had shot on a point.

Mariners owner Marco Gonzales (3-2) allowed three runs out of nine hits and no walk with five strikeouts out of five innings. Paddack (2-3) produced six points out of eight hits in more than five innings.

Tigers 7, Cubs 1

Jonathan Schoop blew up a grand slam to complete a sixth of five runs and four pitchers kept visiting Chicago goalless until ninth in the Detroit win.

Tigers starter Spencer Turnbull (3-2) pitched 5 2/3 innings, allowing for three hits and three walks while hitting five. Miguel Cabrera had two wins, one point scored and one RBI for Detroit, while rookie Isaac Paredes reached base four times and scored one point. JaCoby Jones added a run and a RBI before starting in the eighth inning due to calf pain.

Willson Contreras ruined Detroit’s closing offer with a solo homer on Buck Farmer. Cubs owner Tyler Chatwood (2-2), on his first start since being activated from the injury list, only lasted 1 1/3 innings. He was charged with two runs on three hits while walking five hitters.

Brewers 3, Reds 2

Brandon Woodruff came out of a baseless, base-laden jam in the fifth inning, and Milwaukee scored all of his score in the fourth hand by visiting Cincinnati for a fourth straight loss.

All five points of the game were scored in the fourth inning of a night where the teams combined for 25 strikeouts. Milwaukee won the first two of the four-game set and won consecutive home games for the first time in 2020.

Cincinnati, meanwhile, was held to two or fewer runs for the fourth straight race, while dropping to 2-6 on their 10-game journey.

Marlins 4, Mets 0 (Game 1)

Daniel Castano pitched 4 2/3 effective innings, losing a fear of qualifying for his first career win, and while visiting Miami he beat New York in the opening seven innings of a doubleheader.

Brian Anderson doubled Mets right Rick Porcello twice (1-4) and scored two points for the Marlins, who have been 6-10 since starting 7-1.

The Marlins went ahead before a 65-minute rain delay. Castano conceded six hits in the second longest of his four career outings and hit one, walked three and held the Mets without hits in five beats with the runners in scoring position.

Marlins 3, Mets 0 (Game 2)

Brian Anderson landed a two-run tiebreak brace in the fourth inning, Jon Berti stole three bases in the sixth, and Miami completed a doubleheader sweep in New York.

Anderson broke a goalless draw with his double off reliever Jared Hughes (0-1) to tackle Berti and Corey Dickerson. Berti stole home in the sixth for 3-0, after also stealing second and third bases. Berti also became the first player to steal second, third and home in an inning since Mallex Smith of the Seattle Mariners did so on May 27, 2019, against the Texas Rangers.

Three Miami pitchers combined on a four batters while four New York pitchers teamed up for a two batters. Josh A. Smith (1-0) pitched two goalless innings and Nick Vincent pitched a goalless seventh and got his second save for the Marlins.

The race scheduled in New York in Atlanta has been postponed due to bad weather. The contest was rescheduled Wednesday as part of a doubleheader.
