Ronaldo, Messi, Lewandowski, Neymar: who will win the Best FIFA award this year?

Football fans around the world were shocked when it was announced that the 2020 Ballon d’Or would not go ahead.

The prestigious recognition of France Football has, in fact, become the machination by which the best footballer in the world is recognized each year and its impact on the wider culture is undoubted.

Plus, you get the feeling that the whole debate between Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi hinges on who will hang the boots with the most spherical golden plates to their name.

Press “The Best” to go on

However, it looks like 2020 is not going to pass us by with a complete shortage of individual awards because it was recently claimed that FIFA’s “The Best” awards will indeed go on.

Bayern boss Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said this week in an interview with Kicker via The Sun that football’s governing body will proceed with its own four-year version of the Ballon d’Or.

“According to a statement by the FIFA president, this award should take place,” Rummenigge said. “Gianni Infantino told me that the prize should be awarded to the best player, the best goalkeeper and the best coach. This is very welcome.”

Who will take the prize?

You like to hear it, you really do, because it would be a shame to go a whole year without that level of individual competition, especially when most of the leagues and cups have been able to resume in 2020.

However, organizing the awards ceremony is one thing, but predicting who will take home the prize is another dilemma entirely and one we have not avoided here at GIVEMESPORT.

In fact, we went so far as to select the top 20 contenders for the prize and ranked them based on the likelihood that we think they will be named “Best” by FIFA itself.

Ranking 20 of the best contenders

And if you were as mad as we were when the Ballon d’Or was canceled, you can probably guess who we picked first, but you can still check out the full ranking below:

20. Timo Werner (RB Leipzig)

Give a pat on the back, Chelsea fans, because you have signed one of the best players in the world this season with the German who competed for the European Golden Boot with 34 goals and 10 assists in 45 games.

p1eg3un90j1anr12919d11r1e1f4td.jpg

19. Bruno Fernandes (Manchester United)

Fernandes was an inspired signing for United, racking up consecutive Premier League Player of the Month awards, but took his 12-goal tally with a pinch of salt because eight came from the penalty spot.

18. Alphonso Davies (Bayern Munich)

Bayern’s Canadian full-back has been an absolute revelation this season, as is the owner of Nelson Semedo’s soul, but there is still a long way to go before the 19-year-old challenges himself to become the best player in the world.

17. Jordan Henderson (Liverpool)

Capturing Liverpool in their first Premier League title is reason enough to include Henderson on our list, even if the stats have only recorded him as the 32nd best player in the competition this season and this simply isn’t the material ‘The Best ”.

16. Thibaut Courtois (Real Madrid)

We had to include at least one goalkeeper on the list and no one has kept a clean sheet more than Courtois (15 in 19 games) in the top European leagues and he also has a La Liga trophy to show for his efforts.

p1eg3uuv2k9m9ojs9d4c6d1fljh.jpg

15. Josip Ilicic (Atalanta)

Ilicic may have been missed for Atalanta’s end-of-season matches, but his record of 21 goals in 34 this season, including four against Valencia, makes him the fifth best player in Europe statistically and a worthy contender ‘The Best ‘.

14. Sadio Mane (Liverpool)

For our money, Mane has been Liverpool’s top player this season, racking up 20 goals and eight assists, which is enough for us to give him the nod when the Reds are just world and Premier League champions.

13. Erling Braut Haaland (Borussia Dortmund)

Haaland deserves a spot on this list for one reason and one reason only: goals, and a lot of them. It is surprising how quickly the Norwegian started in the race at the BVB, already boasting 16 strikes in 18 games.

12. Serge Gnabry (Bayern Munich)

The former Arsenal player has scored huge goals for Bayern this season against Tottenham, Chelsea and Barcelona, scoring 21 goals in total, so it could be an outside opportunity if the Bavarians become European champions.

p1eg3v4l911g981mtu1t8ip329acp.jpg

11. Jadon Sancho (Borussia Dortmund)

Unsurprisingly, United are doing everything they can to sign Sancho because overcoming 15 goals and assists is the form of a future Ballon d’Or winner, although we doubt his chances this season with only a DFL-Supercup to his name. .

10. Karim Benzema (Real Madrid)

The campaigns for Benzema to be crowned best player in the world this season are rather cruel, although there is no denying his role in the charge of Real to the La Liga crown and 27 goals in all competitions are pretty good.

p1eg3v3166tklg31d2p1a8csogl.jpg

9. Ciro Immobile (Lazio)

It’s scandalous that Immobile didn’t get more credit for beating Ronaldo and our number one – have you guessed that already? – to the European Golden Boot with 36 breathtaking goals in 37 league games.

The only reason it is no higher than ninth place is because a trophy cabinet made up only of the Italian Super Cup will not be enough to undermine FIFA voters.

8. Thomas Muller (Bayern Munich)

You just need to look at Muller’s Man of the Match performance against Barcelona to understand why he’s one of the top 10 contenders for ‘The Best’ award, but his campaign gets even stronger when you mention his 21 ( !?) assists in the Bundesliga.

p1eg3v4389q5resr173h1fk1567n.jpg

7. Sergio Ramos (Real Madrid)

“Only” the La Liga title might seem a bit disappointing for the Real captain this season, but Ramos is the best defender in the world in his current form and scoring 13 goals from his position, including a free-kick, is simply savage.

6. Kylian Mbappe (Paris Saint-Germain)

Winning the Champions League would be a must if Mbappé were to be crowned best in the world as scoring 30 goals and aspiring trophies in France has become the norm for the 21-year-old.

He lifts “ Big Ears ” on Sunday, however, and his chances will skyrocket, although we think one of his teammates would be in an even better position …

p1eg3v61anc3t138i1qe4gpe1fvq9.jpg

5. Lionel Messi (Barcelona)

We’ll talk a lot about the fact that trophies play an uncomfortably big role in these kinds of awards, but it’s the truth and Messi has absolutely nothing to show from a 2019/20 season that has been individually pretty solid.

Overcoming 20 goals and assists is an impressive feat which means he can’t lose the top five, but capitulating in La Liga, Copa del Rey and Champions League isn’t good enough to take home the top prize.

p1eg3v70kc4vvb3ks2k1itdjfhb.jpg

4. Kevin De Bruyne (Manchester City)

If you are arguably the best player in a Premier League season, you will always be in conversation for the best in the world.

De Bruyne equaled the competition at best of 20 assists, but also scored 13 goals, and although there was a heartbreak in Europe, he was the best player on the field for miles during Lyon’s defeat.

p1eg3v7v5415v1e1s1dadu2vs85d.jpg

3) Cristiano Ronaldo (Juventus)

Ronaldo has been absolutely fantastic in Italy this season, boasting an extraordinary 31 goal tally in 33 Serie A games and equaling the competition’s record of 11 consecutive games with one goal.

But individual rewards are more about teams than we would all like to admit and Juventus’ premature exit from the Champions League, as well as losing two cup finals and winning the championship by just one point will surely keep him.

p1eg3v94nd1rpj55l1rjv1euguocf.jpg

2. Neymar (Paris Saint-Germain)

Neymar over Ronaldo and Messi ??? I lost my mind ???

Look, we’ve seen time and time again that Champions League winners have a big advantage in individual awards, so I have to pick Neymar over the gold duo on the basis that he can still win him.

If Neymar can truly secure victory for PSG on Sunday night, while Ronaldo checked in the round of 16 and Messi was beaten 8-2, there’s no denying he would be above them in the standings.

Leading PSG past its two rivals could also be good enough, not to mention winning more domestic trophies and boasting a record of 19 goals in 26 games despite various injuries.

p1eg3vas1t1qpn1c2ibri1jf56mpj.jpg

1. Robert Lewandowski (Bayern Munich)

But forget everything I said about the 19 nominees earlier, because Lewandowski was way ahead of the competition in 2020 and is definitely nailed to be crowned ‘The Best’ this year.

The Pole has scored a staggering 54 goals in just 45 appearances, establishing himself as the top scorer in the Bundesliga, DFB-Pokal and Champions League.

Oh, and did we neglect to mention that he has already won two of those competitions and is clearly the favorite to win the third? Frankly, the world is its oyster this year.

p1eg3v9t7l1pv61oo414sjb6rf0rh.jpg

Says Kobe Tong of GIVEMESPORT

It must be Lewandowski. It just has to be.

Even though Bayern Munich were completely knocked out 20-0 by Lyon tonight, there is no debate in my eyes as to whether Lewandowski was the best player in the world in 2020 and should therefore be nailed for the award.

The fact that he has managed to break Ronaldo’s record for the most goals in a Champions League campaign in fewer games, as well as exceeding 50 goals in all competitions, is simply a beggar’s belief.

p1eg3vbtqg1e4e18nrhaq12bfr8el.jpg

Even in an era where Ronaldo and Messi’s numbers were seemingly intergalactic, Lewandowski threw a cat among the pigeons by postulating truly comparable stats.

Combine that with the fact that he could really add the Champions League trophy to his already burgeoning cabinet this season and we’re certainly on track to a crushing result in the voting.

If not, I will be even more indignant than when the Ballon d’Or was canceled.

I would jump on the first flight to the ceremony venue, kindly isolate myself for 14 days, speak respectfully to FIFA from two meters away with a face mask and come back with another 14 days in quarantine.

p1eg3vcp5i115grpd1dk31n8o1kmtn.jpg

Actually, maybe not, choose Lewandowski please, FIFA …
