Rio Ferdinand explains what he could do for Manchester United to win the Europa League

Darren Fletcher and Rio Ferdinand agree on what Manchester United could do to win the Europa League.

Manchester United are in the semifinals against Sevilla on Sunday.

With the quarter-finals and semi-finals now limited to one stage due to the coronavirus pandemic, all matches are now taking place in Germany.

Speaking to BT Sport, former United midfielder Fletcher said this could be good for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side.

Fletcher also compared the current Reds squad to United’s League Cup winning team in 2006 and said a trophy win could galvanize them in the future.

He said: “There is something exciting, it almost resembles a small-scale international tournament or pre-season.

“They don’t have the pressure to qualify for the Champions League now and they can hang out with this young team and win a trophy, which can kickstart something special.

“I remember Rio and me, we won the League Cup in 2006 and we felt like a new team. It felt like that trophy was a real kick-off and the drive towards a real streak to win championships and get to the finals. of Champions League.

“The reason I remember him is because we had just signed Patrice Evra and Nemanja Vidic and I was excluded for the final.

“Nemanja and Patrice were on the bench and they arrived and won the medals.

“This was Sir Alex Ferguson who saw it as an opportunity to convince these players to win trophies for Manchester United. Look at the success Vidic and Evra have had afterwards, so it’s smart management.

“It’s amazing what a trophy can do to kick off and galvanize something.”

Ferdinand agreed and said that while United recently won the Europa League with Jose Mourinho, another trophy win will help rebuild the culture of enduring success at Old Trafford.

Have your say in our United end-of-season poll:

He said: “This could be part of creating a new culture in the football team.

“I think the club has been missing out over the past seven or eight years. It is a prolonged winning period what you are looking for, it is not so sporadic to win a trophy here or there.

“It’s challenging for the championship on an annual basis and getting your foot in the finals every year.

“If they can create that culture now and start with the young players who are coming, in the way Ole is trying to shape this team, we will have a good future.

“Again, we have to run.”
