Pere Guardiola sells part of his shares in Girona to Marcelo Claure

The power of Girona changes hands. Pere Guardiola, until now the largest owner, has sold part of his shares to Marcelo Claure, an American-Bolivian businessman who will take control of 35% of the Girona entity. This operation implies that the City Football Group becomes strong and regains control, being the main shareholder with 47%. Pere Guardiola, through the Girona Football Group, is left with only 16%.

The agreement, made official days after the confirmation of the non-promotion to Primera, has been working for months. Pere Guardiola wanted to recover part of the investment made in his day. He wanted to sell. No one knows the reasons, or at least they are not officially communicated. But Girona was full of a rumor that allows Claure, president of Club Bolivar and co-owner of David Beckham’s Inter Miami in MLS, to land in Montilivi. “Since I was a child I wanted to be part of a team in the main European leagues, and it makes me happy that it is Girona. I share the same vision as my fellow shareholders: we want to create a great football club, a beautiful project that generates impact “, said Claure in a video published on the official networks of the white-and-red club.

A few years ago, Claure negotiated with Joan Laporta, absolutely seduced, the possibility of creating a Barça franchise in Miami in order to participate in the American league. In fact, an official ceremony was even held in the presence of Joan Oliver, the former corporate director, in which an offer was submitted to MLS. The refusal of Americans to expand the number of franchises, along with other problems, ended up frustrating the project. Far from giving up, Claure did not stop trying until David Beckham appeared. Both and the Mas brothers govern Inter Miami.

Changes to the board of directors

The Superior Sports Council has approved a transaction that will lead to a modification of the board of directors of Girona at the next shareholders’ meeting, scheduled for 14 September. Until now chaired by Ignasi Mas-Bagà, the general manager of the club, Pere Guardiola will be the one who will assume the position. “I am convinced that Marcelo will help us take the step to be what we want: a Girona in which we are all proud. It’s a privilege to have him here, “said Guardiola. Ferran Soriano, who is becoming the main big fish of Girona, also said: “We will suffer, grow and enjoy together in the coming years, consolidating the club.”
