NFL plans extended social injustice content for week 1 of season

The NFL is planning full social injustice content for Week 1 of the regular season, sources told ESPN.

Among the options discussed by the league and players union, according to a source involved: Players reading personalized poems and delivering first-person vignettes based on the experience of social injustice. These stories could be incorporated into the broadcasts broadcast on match day.

This is in addition to recognizing the victims of police brutality on the backs of helmets and playing or performing what is known as the black national anthem, “Lift Ev’ry Voice and Sing”, before season opener, as NFL ESPN senior editor Jason Reid reported in July.

The Jacob Blake shootout by Kenosha, Wisconsin, police prompted players to cross several sports – with the NBA playoffs as a springboard – to sit down in protest.

Several NFL players and executives told ESPN this week that they generally don’t expect a Week 1 boycott, but the Arizona Cardinals have discussed the option of not playing as a form. protest at a locker room meeting this week. A source with the Cardinals said emotions were raw this week and players will continue chatting to see what everyone is feeling.

Many players consider kneeling during the national anthem to be a minimum for pre-match setups, and stronger displays could be an option.

Giants tight end Evan Engram told ESPN his squad came out of meetings keen to affect local communities, delighted that the NBA and other professional leagues are setting the tone for change.

“It comes down to responsibility,” Engram said. “Law reform needs to be fixed. Say the word accountability – people have to pay for their actions. It is frustrating and painful to see people doing these terrible things without being punished.”
