Matt Kuchar, longtime caddy John Wood has split up; Wife Sybi on the stock exchange at BMW

OLYMPIA FIELDS, Illinois – Matt Kuchar has a familiar face on the bag this week at the BMW Championship after parting ways with longtime caddy John Wood.

Kuchar’s wife Sybi is caddying this week at Olympia Fields as the 42-year-old tries to extend his season another week. Those long-term chances were hugely successful when the veteran opened with a 5 of 75, leaving him eight shots off the lead.

Kuchar and Wood had been together since 2015, teaming up for Kuchar’s win at the 2019 Sony Open and for his bronze medal at the 2016 Olympics. They worked together for the last time at the PGA championship, where Kuchar missed the cut, and the following week Wood told him he wanted to get out of the bag.

“John Wood called me after Greensboro week and said he would finish caddying, at least for me,” Kuchar told GolfChannel.com. “He said he would look into some options with the TV. And so I had to put together a couple of caddies in the meantime. “

Last week Kuchar finished the T-18 at The Northern Trust with swing coach Chris O’Connell in the bag. O’Connell was stationed at Friar’s Head on Long Island this summer, and travel restrictions to and from New York have made it difficult to connect between the two in recent weeks. This week he turned to his wife, who previously caddy included a replacement spell in Mayakoba in 2018 for Zach Johnson, who was playing with Kuchar and whose regular looper at the time fell ill.

“Sybi was planning to come here this week, and then when John retired he said he was happy to do so,” Kuchar said. “It has been retouched a couple of times and it was great for us to be able to spend some time together. I think she enjoys being involved and being in the ropes. “

Kuchar started the week at number 55 in points, which means his season will likely end this week outside Chicago. He plans to have veteran caddy Brian Reed on the bag to kick off the fall portion of the 2020-21 season. Reed has caddied several Tour pros, including a previous stint with Kuchar, and most recently was on the stock market for Kyle Stanley.
