Many dominoes must fall before the NBA Draft

Many things have to happen before the Chicago Bulls are on time.

On Thursday night, the NBA held its annual draft lottery and the Chicago Bulls received great news, securing the No. 4 overall in the 2020 NBA Draft. Almost immediately, the mock draft began rolling out trying to project who would take the Bulls with their pick.

In normal years, this exercise can be fool’s gold. It is incredibly difficult to try to project which player a team might select. For starters, you have no idea how the choices will play out in front of your team. Also, you don’t know how your team organized the draft board.

This is a typical year. However, this is not a typical year for the Bulls. For a variety of reasons, guessing who will select the Bulls in October is next to impossible.

For starters, they have just split from their coach Jim Boylen and although the move was the right one, it still creates a vacancy that needs to be filled. At this point, we have no idea who that candidate will be or what style of basketball they or Arturas Karnisovas want to play. Of course, the style of play will largely determine the pool of players they aim for in the draft.

Furthermore, without knowing the style of the new manager, it is impossible to say whether each of the players currently in training is suitable. We know that Lauri Markkanen and Zach LaVine have expressed some dissatisfaction with the team in the past and rumors have circulated that they would be swapped.

Sure, much of that discontent can be attributed to Boylen, so his departure, in theory, would seem to fix it. However, what if I disagree with the new manager’s approach? Alternatively, what if they don’t fit the coach’s style?

They could remain commercial candidates, which would surely create additional holes to fill in the roster. Obviously, one way to do this would be through the project. So the uncertainty of the roster also makes it incredibly difficult to predict the choice.

At the end of the day, as fans, we will all be digesting as many drafts as possible over the next few weeks. Let’s be honest, it’s fun to imagine some players on your favorite team. Just remember that until these dominoes start falling and the direction of the team becomes a little clearer, we are really throwing darts at a wall.
