Liverpool he reportedly beat Manchester United on signing Sadio Mane because the Senegalese striker did not want to work under Louis van Gaal.

In a recent interview with FourFourTwo, Van Gaal said he was frustrated with United’s inability to negotiate deals for some of its core goals.

The Dutchman was reportedly interested in bringing Neymar, Robert Lewandowski, Sergio Ramos and Sadio Mane to Old Trafford, and said he was thwarted by United’s board.

This has led to eyebrows being raised, as United sources say ESPN that Van Gaal is massaging the truth a little.

They claim that Mane refused to enter talks with United as the striker had no desire to play for Van Gaal due to his restrictive tactics and reluctance to encourage talented players.

And although United have asked questions about Neymar and Thomas Muller, Van Gaal has outgrown signings from Memphis Depay and Bastian Schweinsteiger, despite the club’s reservations.

Sources admit that United “lost control” of recruiting during Van Gaal’s time in office and that subsequent managers, Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, were forced to correct these mistakes.
