Manchester United’s potential XI 2020-21 starting, including Dayot Upamecano

Manchester United are finally moving into the transfer market.

Fans have been increasingly concerned after seeing Chelsea sign several top players over the past few weeks. Frank Lampard’s team finished with the same number of points as the Red Devils in the Premier League last season.

Meanwhile, Manchester City, who finished 15 points clear of United, are getting closer to buying the great Lionel Messi from Barcelona.

And then there is Liverpool, who finished with 99 points last season.

How would it be possible for United to close the gap on Liverpool and City if they can’t improve their squad for the 2020-21 season?

But as we approach September, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is set to land his first summer signing in the form of Ajax midfielder Donny van de Beek, which will cost the Premier League giants £ 40m.

ESPN are now signaling that Solskjaer wants to make RB Leipzig defender Dayot Upamecano his second summer signing.

United, according to ESPN’s report, are prioritizing adding a top-level center-back to partner captain Harry Maguire – and Upamecano is the club’s number one goal.

The 21-year-old recently signed a contract extension until June 2023 but United believe they can sign the defender before the transfer window closes on 5 October.

ESPN also claims that Marcos Rojo, Chris Smalling, and Phil Jones will be downloaded from Solskjaer.

With all of this in mind, what could be United’s first choice starting XI for the next campaign?

Let’s take a look…

Goalkeeper: Dean Henderson

Dean Henderson hasn’t signed a new five-year contract to warm up the Old Trafford bench. He wants David de Gea’s number 1 shirt.

Likewise, United doesn’t pay Henderson £ 110,000 a week to be a backup goalkeeper and nothing else.

De Gea has been too error-prone for the past two seasons and Henderson may very well get the nod against Crystal Palace on September 19.

Right Back: Aaron Wan-Bissaka

After an impressive debut campaign at Old Trafford, Aaron Wan-Bissaka will continue as Man Utd’s first choice right-back.

The 22-year-old will aim to contribute even more during his second season.

Center back: Harry Maguire

Maguire looks set to continue as United captain, despite his recent arrest while on vacation in Greece.

The England international explained his version of events during a BBC interview and has United’s full backing, it seems.

Maguire was mostly decent during his first season at Old Trafford, but he could thrive with another midfielder by his side.

Center-back: Dayot Upamecano

The French Under-21 international joined RB Leipzig from Red Ball Salzburg in 2017 and has gone from strength to strength in the Bundesliga.

Upamecano would start in front of Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly, both of whom Solskjaer is concerned about.

Left-back: Sergio Reguilon

Man Utd have been heavily linked to Real Madrid left-back in recent days.

Would that be an update on Luke Shaw? Maybe yes.

Shaw has been booming for United for the past six years and bringing 23-year-old Reguilon, who spent last season on loan at Sevilla, could be in the club’s best interest.

Midfield: Donny van de Beek

A well-rounded midfielder, Van de Beek is equally happy to be stuck in tackling while scoring or helping goals.

The Dutchman is set to complete his £ 40 million transfer to Old Trafford this week.

Midfield: Paul Pogba

Arguably the club’s most talented player, Paul Pogba no longer wants to leave Man Utd which is great news for all concerned.

The Frenchman will aim to re-establish his status as one of Europe’s best midfielders this season.

Midfield: Bruno Fernandes

Bruno Fernandes made a huge impact after signing for Man Utd in January and fans are hoping the Portuguese midfielder can produce more magical moments during the upcoming campaign.

Left: Marcus Rashford

Marcus Rashford enjoyed his most productive season as a United player last season, scoring 17 goals and providing seven assists in 31 Premier League appearances.

Still only 22 years old, Rashford will get better and better in the coming seasons.

Right: Jadon Sancho

Although news linking Jadon Sancho with a move to Man Utd has died out recently, Solskjaer remains determined to add the Borussia Dortmund winger to his squad.

Sancho, who scored 17 goals and scored 16 more in 32 Bundesliga appearances last season, has the potential to change the game for the Red Devils and fans are looking forward to the 20-year-old.

Center-Forward: Anthony Martial

It’s a huge season with Anthony Martial. Is he consistent enough to lead the line for United?

The quality of the Frenchman is not in doubt, but it remains to be seen whether he can do so week after week over the course of an entire season.

Martial has the full support of the club’s fans and will certainly aim to score 20 league goals for the first time in his career.
