Lindelof on progression in the Europa League

Victor Lindelof admits that Manchester United did not play at the highest level in the grueling Europa League quarter-final win against Copenhagen.

United needed a Bruno Fernandes penalty in extra time to win against the Danes and played a semi-final with Wolves or Sevilla on Sunday in Cologne.

Lindelof did not start the round of 16 but was introduced midway through the second half for Eric Bailly and the Swede couldn’t understand why United struggled.

“It was a difficult match, but in the end we managed to qualify and we are happy with it. I mean, we knew what kind of team they were and I think they made things difficult for us today, even though we didn’t play at our level today.

“I think we could have done a lot better, but when we got the ball they made things difficult for us. Sometimes they pressed up and when they didn’t, they went deep and defended as a unit. It was difficult to create any chances there, but I think we should have scored a few more goals.

“It is very difficult to say just why. Sometimes it happens in football. Obviously it’s been a long season but we played a quarter-final in a European Cup so I think everyone had to be ready for it.

“As I said, sometimes in football it happens that you don’t perform at the level you want. But the important thing is that we won and reached the semifinals. “
