Manchester United great Wayne Rooney identifies Mason Greenwood’s “rare” attribute

Wayne Rooney believes Manchester United striker Marcus Rashford is not a natural scorer, unlike his teammate Mason Greenwood who has a “rare” talent for scoring goals.

Both players were crucial for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer last season with Greenwood making a huge impact in his breakthrough campaign for the Reds.

The 18-year-old finished the season with ten Premier League goals, becoming only the third player to reach such a tally at the age of 18 or younger.

As a result of his impressive performances, Greenwood was first called up to England’s senior team ahead of the Nations League matches against Iceland and Denmark.

Rooney has compared the youngster to Harry Kane due to his finishing prowess, but believes he is a completely different player to his teammate Rashford.

“Greenwood made 40 appearances in Europe and Premier League in 2019-20, compared to [Phil] Foden’s 28, “he wrote in his column for Times.

“He is probably United’s best finisher already at the age of 18 and among the scorers you can see him from day one – Harry Kane and Michael Owen had the talent and it’s the same with Greenwood.

“As I said before, I was not a natural scorer.

“That skill is rare and Gareth needs a real deputy for Kane, someone who can plug in if Harry is injured or suspended.

“For me, Marcus Rashford is not such a natural scorer and neither is Tammy Abraham. But Greenwood can be that player.”
