After being arrested in a brawl on the Greek island of Mykonos, Manchester United captain Harry Maguire pleaded not guilty in court on Saturday on aggravated assault charges. It is “cooperating fully” with the Greek police, the English Premier League club said Friday.
The 27-year-old defender was on vacation in Mykonos when he was arrested outside a bar with two other Brits of close age in an incident Friday morning in which police officers were reportedly threatened and attacked, CNN reported Saturday.
A spokesman for the Southern Aegean Police Directorate confirmed the three arrests on CNN. Police said the officers initially tried to resolve a dispute involving the men and others, but “the three foreigners involved in the incident turned on them, insulting and punching a police officer.”
“The three foreigners were taken to the Mykonos police station, where they strongly resisted upon their arrival, pushing and beating three police officers,” the statement continued. “One of the detainees then tried to offer money so that the proceedings against them were not completed.”
The Sun reported Saturday that the brawl broke out after Maguire’s younger sister was stabbed in the arm.
The fight began when Maguire was apparently lured by rival fans in the bar after hours of drinking.
Her sister Daisy was then stabbed in the arm with a “sharp object”, forcing Harry to step in and defend her, Mykonos Voice reported. Then a big quarrel broke out between Maguire, his friends and other British holidaymakers. Among those celebrating with Maguire was Kate Moss’s sister, Lottie Moss, 22.
Maguire and his friends spent two nights in a jail cell and are now free to return to the UK pending a hearing on Tuesday that Maguire does not have to attend.
Maguire’s lawyer told the Sun he denies any allegations.
Maguire signed with Leicester’s Old Trafford club in 2019 for over $ 100 million. The team finished third in the Premier League this season.
