Man Utd wins Donny van de Beek’s transfer race despite Tottenham’s last bid

Manchester United have won the race for Ajax’s Donny van de Beek after Tottenham failed in the eleventh hour to catch the Dutch midfielder.

Van de Beek, 23, is set to arrive at Old Trafford worth £ 40million in the coming days after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer launched a magic offensive to land a player who was also a target for Barcelona and Real Madrid.

United negotiator Matt Judge moved in today to seal an agreement with the Dutch international after being made aware of Spurs’ attempt to hijack the move.

Van de Beek has signed a five-year contract – with the option of an additional 12 months.

He has told friends in Amsterdam that Solskjaer’s determination to sign him was the key factor in his decision.

Van de Beek refused to play in Ajax’s friendly against Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday after learning that United were preparing to confirm their interest with an official offer.

He appeared to be signed to Real Madrid earlier this summer when the Spanish champions agreed a £ 44.6m fee with Ajax.

But the deal collapsed when the coronavirus crisis broke out.
