Lucien Favre: “Götze was like Messi, we don’t even have to talk about Lewandowski”

EHere are some clichés about Lucien Favre – most of them are incorrect. But that of the cerebral trainer who lacks temperament is the furthest from reality. In the Swiss health resort Bad Ragaz, where Favre is currently completing the training camp with Borussia Dortmund, the Swiss (62) took a lot of time for WELT AM SONNTAG to talk about football, the difficult dealings with young stars and the lessons of life: Favre did it with a lot of passion – and sometimes full physical effort.

WORLD ON SUNDAY: You turned professional at Lausanne Sports in the roaring seventies. How was that back then?

Favre: It was a very different time. What we partially did then would be impossible today. We went to a discotheque with the whole team and partied until five o’clock. You can forget that today. It would no longer be possible if only because of the physical stress that professionals are exposed to. The boys often have to play three times a week. It was different with us.
