Lombardy tour: cycling super talent Evenepoel falls down the bridge

The Belgian professional cyclist Remco Evenepoel fell badly on the Lombardy tour. The 20-year-old collided with the boundary of a bridge while descending, rolled over and fell down a slope.

His Deceuninck-Quick-Step team tweeted that he was conscious and being looked after by doctors in the hospital. The team did not provide any further information at first. The photos show how Evenepoels was transported away fixed on a stretcher.

In Belgium, Eveneopol is considered a child prodigy and has already been compared to cycling icon Eddy Merckx. Most recently he won the Tour of Poland.

For the Deceuninck-Quick-Step team, it is the next serious accident one of its drivers has. On the first stage in Poland, Evenpoel’s team-mate Fabio Jakobsen fell so badly that he suffered life-threatening injuries. On the final stage of the Tour of Poland, Evenepoel held Jakobsen’s starting number in the air as he crossed the finish line.

Chessman collides with car

Even for the German professional cyclist Maximilian Schachmann there was a moment of shock during the Lombardy tour. As can be seen on video recordings, he apparently collided with a private car.

The driver of the SUV turned into a street as she crossed Schachmann’s path. The 26-year-old from the Bora-hansgrohe team apparently had no major injuries and was able to continue. As the best German, he finished seventh, 4:31 minutes behind. The Dane Jakob Fuglsang (Astana) won.
