Gary O’Neil on landing in Liverpool

Gary O’Neil has detailed how he took on his role as assistant coach for the Liverpool U23.

In an interview with TalkSPORT he explained: “I have spoken to some clubs in the lower division about management positions and I know one of the guys in Liverpool. So I just sent him my résumé to ask him if it’s a good thing because I’d never done a résumé before!

“I’ve never heard from him because he’s obviously very busy. About six weeks later I got a call from the academy manager and asked if I would have a chat.

“So I got promoted a couple of times last year, looked around, they interviewed me a couple of times and managed to get the role of U23 assistant coach. I’m delighted.

“I’ve been working with the guys for the last week and I really enjoyed it and I’m really looking forward to the coming year.

“I am obviously very grateful and I feel very privileged that I have managed to start my coaching career at such a big club. It’s nice to work on a youth team and try to offer the boys my experience and help them progress.

“You are excellent. Not only are you in one of the biggest clubs in the world, but you are also the perfect age to train them.

“They already have a lot of quality, but if you can try to add something to their game it can help them prepare to move into the first team from 23-a-side.”

By the way, life advice alarm!

This proves that you should send your resume anywhere! It helped Gary get an amazing job.
