RB Leipzig will challenge Paris Saint-Germain in the semi-finals of the Champions League on August 18 in Lisbon. The German club qualified on August 13 by defeating Spanish club Atletico de Madrid 2-1.

Paris Saint-Germain now know their next opponent in the Champions League. It will be RB Leipzig, totally new to this level of competition. The German club offered itself a place in the last four, this August 13, 2020, by defeating a regular at continental summits, Atletico de Madrid.

A match under control

The start of the game was to the advantage of RB Leipzig (RBL) with a volley at close range from defender Marcel Halstenberg (4th).

After ten minutes of intense pressing, however, the RBL players lifted their foot a little. Defender Stefan Savic took the opportunity to frame a header (10th). But it is especially the Belgian Yannick Ferreira Carrasco who is dangerous with a resumption of the flat foot (13th).

The following ? A great battle between the two teams, but few scoring chances. We have to wait for a ball kick from the defender of Leipzig, Dayot Upamecano (45th + 2), just before the break, and especially a gush from midfielder Dani Almo, shortly after half-time (51st), to worry the goalkeeper of the l ‘Atletico de Madrid, Jan Oblak. Almo indeed cuts the trajectory of a cross coming from the right. His uncrossed header is unstoppable: 1-0.

Joao Felix shakes up Leipzig

Atletico de Madrid clearly lacked inspiration that night. His trainer, Diego Simeone, therefore decides to bring Joao Felix into play. The young winger is immediately to his advantage. In the 69th minute, he sank into the opponent’s area and was mown down by defender Lukas Klostermann. Joao Felix does justice to the penalty spot: 1-1, 71st.

The Spanish club then seems to have done the hard part. But in the 88th minute, midfielder Tyler Adam, who also came into play shortly before, gave Leipzig the advantage with a shot that was largely deflected by Savic: 2-1, final score.

The RBL, which however saw its best player Timo Werner being transferred two months ago to Chelsea (England), finds itself in spite of everything in the semi-final of the Champions League. With the goal of lifting the trophy on August 23 in Lisbon.
