Jurgen Klopp has defended Liverpool’s transfer strategy and says a lot could happen on the market before the window closes.

So far it has been a quiet transfer window for the Premier League champions, who have strengthened Klopp’s squad only with the purchase of Kostas Tsimikas from Olympiacos.

Liverpool won the title with 22 points last season, but defending the title won’t be easy, especially given that Chelsea and Manchester City have signed several players already this summer.

Frank Lampard has welcomed the likes of Timo Werner, Hakim Ziyech, Ben Chilwell and Thiago Silva to Stamford Bridge, while Man City has already spent more than £ 60m on Nathan Ake and Ferran Torres.

Asked about Liverpool’s transfer strategy and lack of signings at Anfield, Klopp said: ‘We’ve already bought players! Kostas, the boys are closing in.

“Look, I don’t know what’s going to happen. There is a long time left until October 5th. We will address our situation as we always have. We will see how much we can or want to spend.

‘The numbers in the squad make sense, we have a great team at the moment with many young players.

‘The size of the team is fine at the moment. I’m happy with what we have, but we’re constantly looking for improvements, even internally. ‘

Klopp’s title-winning side will face Arsenal in the Community Shield on Saturday and the Liverpool manager admits his side may not be at their best.

He added: ‘We just have to deliver results in the game. It’s about fighting hard and digging deep.

‘We should make an adequate attempt. We really want it. I don’t care what other people think.

‘I would be surprised if we play our best game of the season tomorrow. It’s not a friendly match, it’s a real match against Arsenal.

‘Would I like to play a real match after two weeks of preparation? No. But we’ve known that for a while.

‘We have worked very hard. We are preparing for the entire season, one of the most intense we have experienced. “
