Jon Rahm beat Dustin Johnson on the first hole of a playoff in a dramatic climax for the BMW championship at Olympia Fields in Illinois, Chicago.

Spaniard Rahm, 25, looked set to be crowned champion after a bogey-free six-under 64 left him on four unders.

But Johnson, who won last week with 11 hits, took the 15th and then punched a 43-foot 18-foot putt to force extra holes.

Rahm then punctured an even longer putt on the same green in the playoffs while the American’s effort ended up short.

Rahm came from three shots behind Johnson the next day on a par with the Japanese Hideki Matsuyama ahead of Sunday’s round.

The Ryder Cup player made consecutive birdies at 15 and 16 in a glittering round to set the clubhouse goal.

His only missed shot of the weekend was a penalty shot for picking up his ball without scoring it on Saturday.

Chileans Joaquin Niemann and Matsuyama finished another two-to-one return shot at Chicago’s Olympia Fields north.

Englishman Matthew Fitzpatrick finished the weekend four shots ahead at equal level after a final day 67.

The top 30 players on the points leaderboard have qualified for the End of Season Tour Championship at East Lake in Atlanta starting next week.

Tiger Woods, who needed a top five finish, is among those to lose.
