Jerry Rice warns 49ers about possible Earl Thomas signing

Earl Thomas is a seven-time Pro Bowl safety. Outside of the football field it turned out to be a problem. Thomas was recently cut off by the Baltimore Ravens after having an altercation with a teammate. It came after Thomas had a horrific divorce from the Seattle Seahawks. While Thomas still has the talent to draw many teams, San Francisco 49ers Hall of Fame member Jerry Rice has warned his former team to sign him.

Earl Thomas played 10 seasons in the NFL and was a star. The seven-time Pro Bowl safety played his college football in Texas and was drafted by the Seattle Seahawks in the first round of the 2010 NFL Draft. Thomas was the 14th player overall selected.

Thomas, after a stellar rookie season in which he had five interceptions, made the Pro Bowl in his second season with the team. His Pro Bowl selection in 2011 started a five-game winning streak and Thomas capitalized with a $ 40 million stretch in 2014.

Thomas played nine seasons with the Seahawks. He suffered a broken leg at the start of the 2018 season. Thomas signed with the Baltimore Ravens in 2019, playing 15 games and completing his seventh Pro Bowl.

Thomas had two ugly starts in the NFL

Earl Thomas was looking for a second overtime with the Seattle Seahawks heading into the 2018 season. He had a proven track record with his play and durability. Prior to the 2018 season Thomas made six Pro Bowls and had started and played in all 16 games in the first six years of his career.

Thomas and the Seahawks did not reach a contractual deal until the start of the 2018 season. Thomas went public with his demands and said if the team didn’t pay him he wanted to be traded. He never trained with the team in 2018, but played the team’s first four games.

In Game 4, Thomas broke his leg and sadly threw his middle finger at head coach Pete Carroll as he was hauled off the field. This season, Thomas was released by the Baltimore Ravens after an altercation on the field with teammate Chuck Clark. Thomas is now without a team.

There’s no doubt Earl Thomas could help an NFL team this year. The teams have shown interest, but are Thomas’ off-field antics worth the risk? Former San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Jerry Rice has weighed on his former team who may be interested in bringing in Thomas this season.

In an interview with 95.7 The Game, Rice warned the 49ers to jump in and sign Thomas. “You have to be really smart here because if a team like the Ravens let you go, that’s really a statement where this guy – where his head is right now,” Rice said. “I really don’t know him. I don’t know him at all. But for them to make a drastic move like that, I think it sends a message throughout the league that this guy is in trouble.

After taking a trip to the Super Bowl last year, the 49ers are clearly in a win-now mode. Thomas could certainly be of help, but is he worth the risk? Rice apparently doesn’t think so.
