Jeff Horn’s motivation was the big question in his Townsville showdown with Tim Tszyu.
If he was to go back to where he was so briefly at the forefront of his sport, he had to show that he was quiet The Guy.
He is not. And now the biggest question is what’s left with boxing.
When he was drugged by Michael Zerafa in a fight that would lead him to a world title twelve months ago, the conversation about retirement surfaced. But Horn, tough and tough, returned for revenge and started an all-Australian blockbuster against Tszyu. there is a way back to international relevance.
Apparently it was. But briefly, as Tszyu turned out to be way too good for Horn on a night that could mark the end of one of Australia’s great sports stories.
“I never want to see him in a boxing ring again,” said Barry Michael after the fight at the main event.
“He’s proud of Australia. He has achieved some amazing things … but it’s time, it’s enough. It is finished.”
Horn should be in the shape of his life as he prepared for Tszyu, but looked gassed almost immediately; Revised and surpassed by a fighter that made him look more like 42 than 32.
“He unpacked me out there,” Horn said of Tszyu. “And I think he has this young blood; not that i’m old I will not say that I am old. Everyone says I’m old, but I’m not.
“Tim is this hungry for him. I was there and did that. “
The new king of Australian boxing, Tszyu, had nothing but respect for the man he took the crown from as a tribute who felt a lot like parting.
“Jeff hoisted the flag for Australia,” said Tszyu. “He’s the man who started the sport here.
“… It was an honor to share the ring with Jeff. All my respect for you, Jeff. “
Tszyu’s performance was emphatic; a brutal change of guard, which Horn surely served as a reality check.
In boxing, the key is to hit and not get hit. Horn has defied this logic for most of his career; overcome hellish blows to reach this point.
He had his greatest moment: a miracle against Pacquiao to win a world title. And he had his wars and faced an unthinkable punishment. He was bullied against Terence Crawford and came out of 19 brutal rounds against Zerafa only to be beaten by Tszyu.
Now he has to make a call.
“It’s only time to go home,” said Horn after the fight, “cuddle the girls.”
