Heroic victory of Formolo; Roglic continues to lead

The champion of Italy, Davide Formolo (UAE Emirates), won the third stage of the Critérium del Dauphiné this Friday in Saint-Martin-de-Belleville (southeastern France), with thirty seconds ahead of the Slovenian Primoz Roglic (Jumbo), which continues to lead the test.

Formolo triumphantly ended a long escapade. From behind, Roglic beat the Frenchman Thibaut Pinot and the German Emanuel Buchmann, who already escorted him on Thursday at the Col de Porte. The Colombian Egan Bernal (Ineos), winner of the Tour de France, gave up in the last meters and dropped almost ten seconds with Roglic.

Formolo managed to distance his teammates from the breakaway formed at kilometer 40. The Italian, alone in the lead in the final 66 kilometers, faced the last climb (14.8km at 6%) with less than four minutes of advantage, but was able to resist to the finish.

The 27-year-old Formolo finished second at Strade Bianche at the beginning of August, the same place he took at Liege-Bastogne-Liège last year.

On Saturday the fourth stage features seven ascents in just 157 kilometers, between Ugine and Megève. The Bisanne climb, a special category, is 34 kilometers from the finish line on the heights of Megève.
