Freddie Ljungberg has left Arsenal

Freddie Ljungberg has left his role as first team assistant at Arsenal to fill a management role.

The former Gunners winger returned to the club in 2018 after spending two seasons as Wolfsburg’s assistant manager.

Ljungberg had coached Arsenal U15 and U23 teams before moving to Germany.

The 43-year-old said: “I have decided to leave my role as assistant manager in the first team at Arsenal to improve my management experience.

“I have been involved in this club since 1998 and am grateful for all the opportunities they have given me both as a player and as a manager.

“I would like Mikel [Arteta] and the whole team every success for next season. Thanks also to the fans for their constant support and for always being by my side. I hope we will all meet again soon. “

Ljungberg was provisionally placed on trial last December following the firing of Unai Emery

Ljungberg remained as Arteta’s assistant manager when the Spaniard was named Unai Emery’s successor in December, but has now decided to leave Arsenal for a new challenge.

Arsenal manager Arteta said: “Freddie has been a very important member of my squad since my arrival. He did a great job of picking up the squad when Unai left and we all have 100% respect for him as a man and as a coach.

“I know that in the future I will face him on the sideline”.

Arsenal technical director Edu, Ljungberg’s former team-mate, added: “We are really sorry to see Freddie leave because we know how much he loves Arsenal.

“However, we know that he has had various opportunities over the past 12 months and has remained at work at Arsenal. Now he has the opportunity to consider other options, and it makes sense for his career right now.

“Freddie has made a huge contribution in his role as manager, especially when he led the team during that difficult period between Unai’s departure and Mikel’s appointment.

“We will always be grateful for what he did then and for what he has done since, but we fully recognize his desire to move forward and be a coach himself.”
