Once again, Lewis Hamilton is unbeatable. The Mercedes driver triumphs at the Spanish Grand Prix. Rival Sebastian Vettel drives a respectable race, but in the end has to pay tribute to the mess in his team.

Sebastian Vettel has at least kept an all-or-nothing tactic in the Formula 1 boring Barcelona from falling into no man’s land again. The four-time world champion tried with a daring one-stop strategy to save at least a few points at the Spanish Grand Prix on Sunday and ended up in seventh place in the fourth win of the season in the sixth race of the defending champion and world championship leader Lewis Hamilton. Team-mate Charles Leclerc didn’t even make it to the finish in the Ferrari because of an electronic defect.

Up front, Hamilton celebrated his 88th career victory. The Mercedes driver relegated Red Bull’s Max Verstappen to second place in an unspectacular race on the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, while third place went to Valtteri Bottas, who was third in the championship.

Vettel survived the start in the middle of the field from eleventh place unscathed. The German, who had been demoted to midfielder in his Ferrari, was not yet able to make up positions. Vettel had, however, also let the somewhat harder mixture develop, which is not as fast but more durable. With a slightly cloudy sky but a higher asphalt temperature, it was once again a matter of correct tire management.

Hamilton confidently defended the 92nd pole of his career

That was especially the case with Verstappen, who took advantage of the massive problems the two Mercedes had with blisters on the tires last Sunday and won the race. Starting position three behind Hamilton and Bottas. However, Friday practice showed that the Red Bull is on par with the Silver Arrows, which are still black, over the race distance.

Hamilton got off to a clean start, the 35-year-old Briton defended the 92nd pole of his career with ease. Bottas was completely different: The 30-year-old Finn, who was unable to use pole to win a year ago, was overtaken by Verstappen and Lance Stroll from Racing Point. The Mercedes duo blew up, even if Bottas was initially able to move up to third place. Good for Verstappen, who four years ago was able to immortalize himself in Spain as the youngest Formula 1 Grand Prix winner.

Verstappen also stayed in sight, but the 22-year-old Dutchman was not fooled. Hamilton drives “super slow” at the front, he radioed into his pits. When the Brit turned it up a bit, the lead increased to over five seconds. The circuit once again lived up to its reputation as a racetrack that is very difficult to overtake. No action on the track.

Vettel should initially benefit from the tire changes, as eleventh he had a free choice of rubbers and was able to stay out longer than some of the rivals. On lap 30 of 66 laps, Vettel’s team-mate Leclerc got new tires, which were very soft at the end. The somewhat tougher from Vettel, surprisingly, too. The 33-year-old Heppenheimer also came in and was sent back onto the track with the softest mixture, rank 14. It was actually clear: Vettel would have to come in again. Or?

The reasons were initially unclear. Team boss Mattia Binotto had previously emphasized in an interview with “Bild am Sonntag”: “We help him wherever we can. We stand by Sebastian, just as he stands to Ferrari and our whole team on the track. ”He also said:“ I understand that a lot has been written in Germany about alleged tensions between him and us, but that is all total nonsense . “

Dark clouds came up anyway. After days of glaring sunshine, rain suddenly threatened. For Leclerc, however, it was still over in the dry. The car turned all at once, the engine stopped. Leclerc got the car running again, but fell back to last place and dragged his broken Ferrari into the pits. “Unfortunately, the race was over before the engine stopped.”

Vettel worked his way through further tire changes of the rivals and wanted to know from the pits how much gas he could give, while Verstappen came in again to change tires and initially slipped to third place. There was no answer. Then suddenly the box radioed and asked Vettel if he wanted to finish with the tires. “I asked you that earlier,” countered Vettel, and part of his answer was beeped over.
