Former Manchester United youth Angel Gomes completes Lille’s move

The teenage attacking midfielder will spend next season on loan at Boavista after signing a five-year contract with the French

Lille announced that they have completed the signing of former Manchester United youth Angel Gomes on a five-year contract.

The attacking midfielder was a free agent after failing to reach terms with the Red Devils.

Lille fans, however, will have to wait to see him in their colors as he will be loaned to Portuguese team Boavista for the 2020-21 season.

“We are very happy to welcome Angel Gomes who is released from Manchester United,” said Lille CEO Marc Ingla. “Angel represents one of the major international prospects in his position.

“He is a very intelligent player in the decision-making process, technical, agile, but also gifted with strong leadership skills, as demonstrated by the English Under 20 captain.

“He is still young but has immense talent and potential. We are very happy to have convinced him to join the LOSC.”

Gomes comes from a football background as a cousin of Portuguese international Nani, while his father Gil Gomes, who attended Sheffield Wednesday, also spent time playing professionally in France for Tours.

Able to play away or for the center, 19-year-old Gomes has been in Manchester United’s books since 2006, turning pro with Old Trafford squad in 2017.

He participated on eight occasions for the senior squad during the 2019-20 season, including three in the Europa League and two games in the Premier League, but was unable to be decisive in any of these meetings.

However, in Premier League 2, he had scored four goals and two assists in just 429 minutes of action over five games.

It represents Lille’s third summer addition, after strikers Isaac Lihadji and Burak Yilmaz at the club, both arriving with free transfers.

Meanwhile, Lille have been active in terms of player sales, having allowed Victor Osimhen to leave for Napoli for a claimed € 81 million, including any future bonus payments.

Center-back Gabriel, meanwhile, may be leaving as he continues to grab the attention of several Premier League teams, including Manchester United, Arsenal and Everton, while Jonathan Ikone has also been linked to a summer transfer away from Stade Pierre-Mauroy. , where the club must be careful to comply with UEFA’s FFP restrictions.
