Five NFL field officials, two replay officials retire from season

Five game officials have opted out of the 2020 season due to the coronavirus pandemic, the NFL said on Friday, and a source told ESPN that two replay officials have also stepped down.

The voluntary rulings, in conjunction with an agreement reached last week between the league and the NFL Referees Association, put the league’s list of officials at 114.

That’s enough to fully occupy every NFL game this season, but the league should add perhaps half a dozen more officials in the coming weeks to ensure it has enough staff to cover. possible illnesses and / or quarantines in the next six months.

The NFL has released the names of the five game officials, none of whom are referees: linesman Jeff Bergman, back judge Steve Freeman, ground judge Greg Gautreaux, ground judge Joe Larrew and back judge Tony Steratore.

Game officials who have retired will receive a stipend of $ 30,000 and employment guarantees for the 2021 season.
