Finally, Morbidelli won the first podium in MotoGP

Brno

Franco Morbidelli won the first podium in his career at the Czech MotoGP. The Petronas Yamaha SRT racer finished second, behind champion Brad Binder.

At the Brno Circuit, Sunday (9/8/2020), Morbidelli immediately led the race after the start. He beat his team mate, Fabio Quartararo, and Avintia Ducati rider, Johann Zarco.

But it turns out that Brad Binder appears dashing. Starting in seventh position, he finally stuck to Morbidelli in second place since lap 8.

When the race left 9 laps, the South African racer succeeded in taking the leading position. Morbidelli was not unwilling to catch up, but he did not want to lose his chance to get on the podium for the first time.

In the previous race at the Andalusian MotoGP, the Italian rider failed to finish after his motorbike experienced a problem and stopped in the middle of the race.

“Overall, the race this time went well. I also started well,” said Morbidelli after the race, as broadcast by Trans 7.

“I did what was planned, keep the rhythm of the race and don’t overheat the tires. Don’t push yourself, because this week’s race is very crucial.”

“Then I saw Brad following and I said, ‘OK, I don’t want to do anything silly’, I just tried to ride my bike to the finish and get my first podium,” he explained.

Since his debut in MotoGP in 2018, Morbidelli has never finished in the top three. Therefore, even though he failed to become a winner, he was also grateful for the runner-up position this time.

“It was amazing. I was feeling so hot, and I just wanted to enjoy this moment,” said Morbidelli.

“I thank my team, to all who work with me. Now we rest three days and then go to Austria with great strength and happiness,” he concluded.

These results brought Morbidelli shot to third in the riders’ standings with 31 points. Furthermore, the Austrian MotoGP race will be held at the Red Bull Ring, Sunday (16/8).
