Earlier Admiral’s Cup yacht sunk

Dramatic rescue operation in the North Sea: the sailing yacht with which Hamburg-based Hans-Otto Schümann won the Admiral’s Cup in 1973 sinks off Cuxhaven. Seven sailors are rescued unharmed.

Dhe former German Admiral’s Cup winning yacht “Rubin” from 1973 sank off Cuxhaven in the North Sea. The 15 meter long yacht, which is now called “Sharki” and has Stettin as its home port, had seven Polish sailors on board, as the German Society for the Rescue of Shipwrecked People (DGzRS) announced on Wednesday. The four men and three women were able to go to a life raft. After the emergency call, shortly before 11 p.m. on Tuesday evening, the sea rescuers rushed to the rescue with two lifeboats. In addition, a patrol boat of the Hamburg water police drove to the scene of the accident. The sailors were all unharmed.

According to initial findings, the yacht had probably collided with a fairway buoy, as the German Society for the Rescue of Shipwrecked People (DGzRS) announced on Wednesday. The “Sharki” was on the way from the Kiel Canal to Helgoland.

One of the sailors alerted the sea rescuers. The position indicated by her was several nautical miles from Cuxhaven. The sea rescuers informed surrounding ships and received feedback from a Belgian freighter with visual contact to the sailing yacht. The freighter stayed nearby until the rescuers arrived.

Hans-Otto Schümann, entrepreneur, ocean sailor from Hamburg and long-time president of the German Sailing Association, won the legendary “Admiral’s Cup” for ocean yachts in 1973 with the “Rubin”. All 16 yachts from Hans-Otto Schümann were named “Rubin”. In addition to 1973 Schümann also won the Admiral’s Cup in 1985 and 1993 as part of the German team with his “Rubin”. Schümann died in 2014.
