Düren wins the Middle Rhine Cup – and challenges FC Bayern

Dhe fifth division club 1. FC Düren gets its game of life: The merger club, which was founded in 2017, surprisingly won the Middle Rhine Cup final against Alemannia Aachen and, as a reward, faces defending champions Bayern Munich in the first round of the DFB Cup. Düren defeated the regional league club and the former Bundesliga club 1-0 (1-0) and welcomed Bayern to the start of the cup round on September 11 (8.45 p.m. in the FAZ live ticker for the DFB Cup and Sport1).

Adis Omerbasic (20th minute), who was only signed on Friday, made the decision against the former European Cup participant in the Sportpark Nord in Bonn. Third division relegated Carl-Zeiss Jena and Chemnitzer FC also made it into the first round. Jena clearly won the Thuringia Cup final against FSV Martinroda 8: 2 (3: 1) and played in the DFB Cup against Werder Bremen. Chemnitz won against FC Eilenburg 2-1 (1-0) and met TSG Hoffenheim.

Strange: In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Hansa Rostock won 3-0 (1-0) against Torgelower FC Greif and is expecting VfB Stuttgart for the third time in a row. Meanwhile, Waldhof Mannheim prevailed against FC Nöttingen 4-1 (0-0) in Baden and faces SC Freiburg. In Berlin, VSG Altglienicke triumphed against Viktoria Berlin 6-0 (1-0) and are now playing against 1. FC Köln.

The final day was originally supposed to rise on May 23rd. In eleven of the 19 matches on Saturday, some fans were even allowed into the stadium. “I’m happy for everyone who can allow spectators”, said DFB President Fritz Keller, who was a guest at the Hessen final between FSV Frankfurt and TSV Steinbach Haiger (0: 1).
