Dean Solomon, Andrew Welsh Suggests Stuart Dew Threatened, Gold Coast Suns News

Former Essendon midfielder Andrew Welsh has suggested that his old team-mate Dean Solomon was fired from the Gold Coast Suns because Stuart Dew felt “threatened”.

Solomon, Dews 2IC at the Suns, was part of a widespread culling of the club on Monday that included social affairs chief Shaun Hart and assistants Nick Malceski and Ash Prescott.

While Gold Coast football boss Jon Haines said the calls were made because of the economic impact of COVID-19, Welsh suggested his old teammate had a more dire motive for being fired.

“It smells a bit like mine, maybe a senior coach who sees how good (Solomon) is and is threatened, but hides behind the soft cap decision.” Welsh tweeted.

“No doubt every club will want to speak to him, but the call doesn’t seem like a GC best interest call.”

Welsh’s tweet was also retweeted by Solomon’s 2000 premier teammate and Essendon record holder Dustin Fletcher.

Solomon’s dismissal came as a big surprise in the league. The 40-year-old was widely considered a senior coach.

The former defender recently completed his Level 4 coaching accreditation and interviewed for Fremantle’s senior coaching job following Ross Lyon last year.

Gold Coast’s sacking of Solomon comes despite signing a new deal with the club in late 2019 that should stay with him through the 2022 season.

It remains to be seen where Solomon’s next target will be and his former club Essendon will likely be calling.

The Bombers brought back Solomon’s premier teammate Blake Caracella as an assistant coach last summer after working in Richmond and Geelong.

Solomon made 158 of his 209 career games for Essendon between 1998 and 2006, and played all 25 games in Essendon’s 2000 Premier League season.
