Dean Henderson: What Man Utd Told Chelsea About Transfer to Signing New Contract | Football | Sport

Manchester United goalkeeper Dean Henderson has signed an exceptional contract extension. The rising star’s future has been the subject of speculation following a brilliant inaugural Premier League campaign while on loan at Sheffield United.

Henderson has written down a five-year deal, with the option of an additional season, worth over £ 100,000 a week.

He said: “The path I have followed over the past five years has been fantastic for my development and the invaluable period of the loan at Sheffield United was part of it.

“United’s goalkeeping department is excellent; there are three top-level goalkeepers who have achieved so much in the game and I’m looking forward to working with the group. The trust that the coach and the club have shown in me with this contract means a lot to me and will continue my path as a goalkeeper.

“I will give everything to improve every day so that I can play as many games as possible for this great club.

Henderson will have a chance to challenge De Gea, however, and Solskjaer said: “We are delighted that Dean has signed his new contract. He had another great season at Sheffield United, where he gained a lot of experience and grew both as a player and as a person.

“Dean is a fantastic young goalkeeper with the attitude and pace of work to keep improving every day.

“We are in a strong position within the goalkeeping department and this gives us the competition for the places we are looking for in the squad. Dean is another great example of the kind of player who has gone through the Academy and truly understands what it means to be at Manchester United.

“We look forward to working with Dean and continuing to develop his talent.”

The new deal was a pressing issue for club leaders due to Henderson’s previous deal expiring in 2022, as Chelsea were looking to lure him to Stamford Bridge.

Frank Lampard wants a new goalkeeper after being little impressed with the signing of club record Kepa Arrizabalaga.

While Solskjaer is currently unable to secure Henderson a spot in the first team, Lampard was ready to make him a starter.

But Football Insider claim that United sent Chelsea a blunt message that they would not sell Henderson to one of the top four rivals.

A third campaign for Henderson on loan to Bramall Lane was out of action after the Blades spent £ 18.5 million on Aaron Ramsdale from Bournemouth.

He conceded just 78 goals in 86 appearances, keeping a clean 35 clean sheet, in two seasons with the club.

Henderson is hoping to start in goal when United kick off their 2020/21 Premier League campaign at home against Crystal Palace on 19 September.
