The Week 14 game between the New York Jets and the Seattle Seahawks will have a lot of juice because of Jamal Adams’ scenario. Jets defensive coordinator Gregg Williams may have provided a little extra on Thursday.
First commenting on last month’s successful trade that sent the star to safety in Seattle, Williams pushed on the Seahawks’ defensive plan.
When asked if Adams leaving would change the way he deploys his safeties, Williams replied, “It really isn’t. Either way, a lot of us know how we do these things. . “
Then Williams added, “Jamal can get bored out there because they don’t use their security stuff with all of the complexities… uh, maybe don’t show what they do as much as we do. “
This was a reference to the signature Seahawks ‘Cover 3 scheme, which is considered vanilla in comparison to Williams’ ever-changing facades and disguises.
Of course, the Cover 3 worked brilliantly for the Seahawks, one of the top 10 defensive teams in every season from 2011 to 2016. That period included a Super Bowl championship and the era of the “Legion of Boom”, which produced security stars Earl Thomas and Chancellor Kam.
Williams was full of praise for Adams, who enjoyed a 2019 All-Pro season featuring 6.5 sacks. This was one of the main reasons the Jets, despite numerous injuries, finished seventh in total defense.
At the same time, Williams suggested that his system contributed to Adams’ success, adding how that same system could resist his departure.
“We will continue to do the exact same things, but we will highlight the people we have here,” said Williams. “As you saw what we did [last year]he may have had his most productive year here because of how we’ve showcased his skills.
“I’ve had a lot of really, really good guys in this job. Over the years I’ve had a lot of good securities to be able to build things. Now he’s the next man.”
Adams will be safely replaced by Bradley McDougald, who the Jets acquired in the trade with the 2021 and 2022 first-round picks. McDougald will be paired with free safety Marcus Maye, with rookie Ashtyn Davis potentially playing a specialty role.
