Buccaneers’ Bruce Arians and NFLPA manager DeMaurice Smith swap beards over the value of protests

Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach Bruce Arians and NFLPA executive director DeMaurice Smith traded beards on the merits of the protest on Friday.

The Arians said Thursday they believe it is more important to act than protest as the teams canceled training following the police shootout on Jacob Blake.

BUCCANEERS HEAD COACH BRUCE ARIANS: “ I DON’T KNOW IF PROTEST IS AN ACTION ”

“I think your responsibility is to act. I don’t know if the protest is an action, ”Ariens told reporters, according to the NFL network.

“I think every guy has a personal thing. I would beg [them] to take action. Find a cause and support it financially or do something to change the situation. Because protesting doesn’t do shit in my opinion. I have seen him since 1968. “

Smith responded to the Arians’ comments on Twitter, writing, “Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but it is clear that he is woefully uninformed about the history of protest both in sport and in America. “

The tweet accompanied a photo of the late Congressman John Lewis.

“Yeah, I have a story,” Arians said Friday, according to ESPN. “It could be a little longer than his.”

The Arians have their own history with social justice. He was the first white player to play with a black player at Virginia Tech. He’s also the only NFL coach with a black offender, defensive teams, special teams, and a run-game coordinator.
