Ben Chilwell could become Chelsea’s third big signing of the summer

Chelsea are on the verge of agreeing a deal to sign left-back Ben Chilwell from Leicester for a contract in excess of £ 50m.

An agreement between the clubs was “almost closed” on Tuesday evening, according to a source involved in the talks, and could be announced as early as Wednesday.

Chelsea beat Leicester in the Champions League on the final day of the 2019/20 Premier League season – pushing the Foxes into the Europa League – and have now convinced them to part ways with one of their precious assets.

Chilwell, whose contract with Leicester runs until 2024, is keen to move to Stamford Bridge, where he will join Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner, who have already signed from Ajax and RB Leipzig respectively.

Chelsea are also in talks to sign Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Kai Havertz and former Paris Saint-Germain captain Thiago Silva, who will undergo medical examinations on Thursday as they try to build a Premier League fourth place and appearance. in the FA Cup Final in Lampard’s first season in office.

Chelsea will also need to allow players to leave this summer, with left-back Emerson Palmieri vulnerable due to Chilwell’s imminent arrival. Inter are reportedly interested in the Brazilian-born Italian international.

Analysis: Chelsea back expensive Chilwell to come forward

Peter Smith of Sky Sports:

Ben Chilwell wasn’t cheap. He was under contract until 2024 and with Leicester with no pressure to sell, the Foxes resisted for a huge tax from Chelsea, just as they did when Manchester United had to pay them £ 80m for Harry Maguire last summer.

So is it worth it? Chelsea have made left-back a priority area this summer and while Chilwell eclipses the quality of support Emerson Palmieri, who looks likely to be returning to Italy, offers more forward than longtime blue Marcos Alonso?

In defense Chilwell is arguably more reliable than the Spanish full-back, but with the players in this position now measured as much – if not more – by their contribution in the offensive third it is clear that the youngster still has room to improve. Last season he recorded six goal appearances (three goals, three assists), which is the same number as Alonso (four goals, two assists) in nine fewer games.

Chelsea and Frank Lampard are expecting a significant increase in that yield given the money they paid. But Chilwell is 23 and there’s a Chelsea element backing England’s first-choice left-back to kick at Stamford Bridge. It cost Chelsea a lot of money to see if that trust will pay off, but Lampard has already shown that he is willing to give emerging stars a chance to shine.
