As the NBA experiences virtual reality in the bubble, the side effects remain: The Athletic

Symptoms look like side effects of a prescription drug: dizziness, nausea, vomiting, headache, sweating, eyestrain, and disorientation.

But it’s not a cholesterol or heart drug.

It’s virtual reality, a technology that’s been plagued by high rates of motion sickness-like symptoms for about half of users, the researchers say.

Technology has been in the mainstream for 30 years – remember that scene in 1993’s “Jurassic Park” of the scientist sequencing the dinosaur’s DNA using a VR headset? – but it didn’t get significant traction as a consumer technology. Attempts by Nintendo and Sega to bring raw VR gaming technology to market in the mid-1990s were notable failures.
