Are 49ers fans unfair to Javon Kinlaw?

Arguably the biggest start for the 49ers this offseason was DeForest Buckner’s trade to the Colts for the 13th overall pick in the draft.

Whenever this profession is mentioned by one of the talking heads on television, it’s inevitably followed by a mention from the man the team drafted with that pick, Javon Kinlaw.

In today’s podcast, Project Bleacher Report scout Matt Miller says it’s not as easy as swapping one number 99 for another in the same position.

“Bucker kind of became underestimated by 49ers fans after this trade. It was like, ‘Well, he wasn’t that good anyway.’ Yeah, he is. He’s the second best defensive tackle in football … Even if Kinlaw becomes one, he won’t be him the first year. It’s not an Aaron Donald type prospect that’s going to wreak havoc on day one. I think it makes no sense to say, ‘This rookie is going to come and replace our all-professional defensive tackle. “You can’t expect this level of play from him just yet. It really isn’t fair to Kinlaw if someone puts that level of expectation on him.

You can hear the rest of what Miller had to say about Kinlaw, as well as his expectations for Brandon Aiyuk and the offense this season by clicking the link above. The five star reviews are good too.
