10 routes that every road cyclist must do in Girona.

In recent years, Girona has become one of the reference cities in the world of cycling. Dozens of professional runners from all continents and also amateurs fill the roads of the area almost every day. The Angels and the medieval villages of the Baix Empordà

With 51.69 km and 651 m of ascent, the route ascends the summit of Los Angeles and descends to Madremanya. From there it goes to Púbol and La Pera and returns to Girona via Flaçà and Bordils.

Designed for cyclists with a larger background, the proposal also ascends Los Angeles and descends to Madremanya, later passing through towns such as Púbol or La Pera. On this occasion, however, the route leads to towns such as Corçà, Ullastret, Gualta, Ullà, Bellcaire d’Empordà and Foixà. The route accumulates 1,220 m positive in 103.16 km.

Els Àngels and Santa Pellaia

Moderate


One of the most classic itineraries in the Girona area is the one that crosses the Gavarres, on two occasions, to make the ascent to the Sanctuary of the Virgin of the Angels and to the town of Santa Pellaia. The selected route ascends in the first instance to Santa Pellaia and finally to the Angels from Madremanya. A total of 56.81 km are covered and 1,177 m are climbed.

Sant Mateu de Montnegre

Easy


A simple route of 53.77 km with 410 m of positive gradient. The route, which as its most characteristic landmark is the ascent to the Church of Sant Mateu de Montnegre, in the heart of Les Gavarres, offers unparalleled views of the highest points of the coastal massif.

The Ardennes Massif and the Costa Brava

Hard


Of difficult difficulty, the route ascends the Ardennes massif, also known as the Cadiretes massif, and leads to Sant Feliu de Guíxols, previously passing by the iconic GI-682 road that allows you to enjoy the sea while reaching a perfect harmony with the cliffs of Tossa de Mar, Santa Cristina d’Aro and Sant Feliu de Guíxols. The journey is 99.65 km with an ascent of 1,613 m.

The Rocacorba mountain

Hard


With 10 km and 685 m of ascent, the top of the Rocacorba mountain, the Puigsou (991 m altitude), is one of the most emblematic peaks in the territory. Leaving from the city of Girona, the path extends to 72.66 km with an ascent of 1,419 m. It is of difficult difficulty.

The Sanctuary of the Virgen del Mont and the lake of Banyoles

Very difficult


A new classic for road cyclists is the ascent to the Sanctuary of the Virgen del Mont (1,125 m). The chosen route ascends from the municipality of Cabanelles and on the way back, it goes around the lake of Banyoles. Listed as a very difficult route, a total of 1,804 m of positive gradient and 130.23 km accumulate in the legs.

The Girona Gran Fondo

The route of 121.85 km and 1,620 m of ascent crosses the volcanic area of ​​La Garrotxa. The route goes through towns such as Canet d’Adri, Sant Martí de Llémena, Les Planes d’Hostoles, Sant Esteve d’en Bas and Les Preses. On the other hand, the way back passes through Santa Pau, Sant Miquel de Campmajor, Camós, Palol de Revardit, Sant Julià de Ramis and Sarrià de Ter.

One of the itineraries that could not be missing from the list is the route taken by the GI-542 road between Anglès and Sant Hilari Sacalm. The road, of splendid beauty, crosses the municipality of Osor. During the journey you cycle 102.42 km with 2,002 m of positive gradient.

Vall de la Llémena and Estanyol

Easy


And last but not least, an easy level route that shares part of the previous itinerary, is the one that goes from Girona to Sant Martí de Llémena passing by Sant Gregori and then going to Bonmatí and Estanyol . Designed for beginners, 49.78 km are completed with 447 m of ascent.
